Cranberry LSIC Meeting Minutes from September 30, 2024

The meeting began with a welcome from Mrs. Gunter and introductions of all present LSIC members.

The group elected Mrs. Juliana Huff as the LSIC Chairperson for the 2024-25 school year.

Mrs. Gunter reviewed Cranberry’s assessment data. There was a discussion regarding “Walk To Intervention” for all students in grades K-5.

The group spoke about the addition of a social worker to Cranberry’s staff for 3 days each week. The question was raised about possibly having the social worker all 5 days.

One of the biggest facilities needs mentioned was the playground. Mrs. Gunter explained that we applied for a grant last year through the county and that those grants have not yet been awarded. She explained that we will apply again in the next cycle of grants. She also reported that our Read-A-Thon last spring raised $4000 for playground improvements.

The staff members discussed the need for someone to serve as the SAT coordinator for the school. At some schools, the Assistant Principal handles this job. One teacher mentioned that some other counties in the state have been hiring professional staff members to act as the SAT coordinators at their schools—while paying a stipend for the extra time and work. Is this a possibility in Raleigh County?

A parent suggested that a “Glow Read-A-Thon” might be a good fund raiser for Cranberry this year. She had heard about a school doing it and being very successful.

We discussed our Leader In Me program and the benefits we see. It goes along perfectly with PBIS. Our students use their leadership skills learned at Cranberry after they leave here. Counselors, principals and teachers from the middle school have commented to various people that they can often pick out Cranberry kids based on their willingness to speak in public, comfort making eye contact and addressing adults, filling leadership roles, etc.

Our next meeting will be held at Beckley-Stratton Middle School on November 12, 2024 at 6:00 pm. This will be the meeting with the members of the Board of Education.
